Together in Support of Change

Congressman Adam Smith is joining the people of Washington State in an effort to create rational and no-nonsense police reform. Washington's Office Involved Use of Deadly Force laws are regressive and outdated. This is why Congressman Smith is endorsing I-873 to remove the "without malice and with a good faith belief" clause from our laws. Laws that are functionally unenforceable are not good for our citizens or our law enforcement. I-873 is one step towards a safer future for all of us and future generations in Washington.

"I am proud to stand with so many others in our communities in strong support of Initiative 873. As a mother and grandmother, it’s been heartbreaking to see so many families being torn apart by police shootings. And these tragedies are only made worse by a law that effectively undermines accountability and prevents justice from being done. We know the vast majority of police officers are doing the right thing and putting their lives on the line every day to protect our families and communities, but we need to be honest that there are some serious systemic problems in our justice system that need to be addressed, and passing this initiative would be a good step in the right direction."

 U.S. Senator Patty Murray

"I'm honored to support I-873 as a critical step in reforming our State's Use of Force laws. Bias in policing is real, and it too often has fatal consequences for people of color in our State. When we championed legislation in Olympia this year to reform our Use of Force laws, we knew it would be an uphill battle. Now, it's important to take an initiative to the ballot. If you believe, like I do, that we must stand up against structural racism in our criminal justice and law enforcement system, I hope you'll join me in supporting I-873." - State Representative Brady Piñero Walkinshaw (D-43)
